Summer Season - Week Six - July 19th

- Week Five saw Sabr pummel Ihsan by a 5-1 score and Yaqeen dominate Haya for their first win of the season by a 5-1 score.

Reminder that the Glove Rule goes in to effect for this week’s games. Hockey gloves and lacrosse gloves will only be allowed.  Players without this equipment will not be allowed to participate similar to the visor/cage rule.

- With one week left before the break, Sabr looks to be like the team to beat. Yaqeen seems to be a rejuvenated team with the addition of Luqman Arshad.  Ihsan and Haya both are trending downwards after strong starts to the season.

- Yaqeen looks to have found its spark plug with the addition of Luqman Arshad.  As his stability on defence has allowed GM Mohammad Hamoud to move up into the centre position. Stomping on Haya 5-1 and Hamoud earning 3rd star of the week honours with 1 goal and 1 assist. This veteran team is the OG I-slam team with an average age of 37 years old. Can the veteran savviness help propel this team to a top2 finish?  One caveat is they need Arshad to stay out of the penalty box - a place where he tends to visit often over the years.

- Haya looks to have gained much needed speed this team dearly lacks, grabbing Rizwan Malik as compensation from Yaqeen. Haya is a team built on snipers with no speed at all. They are big, they are slow. But what they lack in speed, they make up in goal scoring ability. Leading the league in goals scored. GM Dawood Ciombar does not have Humza Ali to burn through opponents, as he did the past few seasons. Expect Dawood to pull the trigger and give up one of his snipers for a speedy forward.

- Ihsan, whom analysts predicted would be the top offensive team and who would walk into an easy championship game have seem to struggle. Posting only one win. GM Ajmal Esmatyar has built this team on young, fast forwards who can score at will. Led by superstar Yusuf Ingar, who seems to be the only offensive spark that has been consistent. But with the attendance issues affecting this team, Ingar literally has no one to play with. Last season’s Rookie of the Year runner up Abraar Gangat has been ghosting, making only 2 games. For this team to win, attendance must be crucial every week.

- Sabr is probably the deepest team in this season. Boasting two solid lines of scoring. GM Arslan Mian drafted a great mix of veterans and young guns. This was on display last week as they demolished Ihsan 5-1. Finally having a full squad, this team has shown that it cant be beat. But can this continue? Arslan Mian needs its players to stay focused on playing solid hockey.

- Farhan Saleh has once again shown that he is a top defenceman in this league, shutting opponents down while also helping out on the offensive side. I believe we have an early Defenseman of the Year candidate here. He helped out huge last week as he notched 1 goal and 1 assist, and was instrumental in shutting fellow friend Yusuf Ingar down.

- Vasim Kagzi or “Coco” as he is known, has been a disappointment this season. As he has yet to show anything on the offensive side of things. He has been missing simple passes and defensive assignments, as if it weren’t for his mishap last week, Mobin would have had his shutout. He will get his chance for revenge this week against Haya, as the last time they played he scored a buzzer beating goal at the end of the game, but the referees blew it off.

- Ahmad Mobin is quietly posting some of his best career numbers as his GAA is a stunning 1.81. Far better than the 3.42 he posted last season, which was the second lowest. If it weren’t for key mistakes from the defence, Mobin would be looking at 2 straight shutouts. Mobin is known as a second half coaster, will this be the season he turns it around ?

- Meanwhile Imran Alvi is posting the worst numbers of his career. He posted a crazy 1.73 GAA last season, which was filled with superstars. Earning the top goalie honors. So far this year he is deadlocked for last place with a 3.50 GAA. Is it the marriage blues? Is it his defence??  Sophomore jinx?

- Arif Khan had himself a game for the ages as he picked up 2 goals, with a 3rd getting waved off due to a penalty. His nasty hands made for some unforgettable sights as he went into classic Arif mode, scoring a dirty backhand goal. One Which he has been practicing for 20 years now.

- Ammal Esmatyar was a no show last week and it showed as brother Ajmal looked lost out there without him. Ammal has been a head turner this season as the 14th overall pick looks to be a steal, as he has some crazy hands and control the game down with ease.

- Farrukh Khan, whom is coming off a disappointing fall season, and who has only registered 1 point needs to get it together as soon as possible. Once a top level defenseman in this league, he has struggled on both sides of the ball. Will the addition of Luqman Arshad allow Farrukh to take more risks ?

- Imran LocknLoad Lakhanpal is playing defence this season? In one of the more odd moves this season, Imran is a bonafide sharpshooter, but he has nothing to show for this season. The former Tier-2 scoring champ needs to get it going, playing defence should allow for more sniping opportunities but he has exactly zero. The Hanger is made for someone like him to succeed, expect him to have a strong finish to the season.

- Umer Buksh makes his return to the rink this week, as he left his team to go party in Vegas. Looks like he took an early vacation to celebrate the reputation hes built up this season. The “Bone Crusher” has left a victim injured in every game he has played this season. One player has had to drop out, another player failed to make to it their next game. Haya has won every game that Umer has played. Will this success continue?? There has been chatter that players do not want to play the ball on the defensive side Buksh mans. Lets see what happens this week.

Summer Season - Week Five - July 12th

IMPORTANT:
**All players registered in the Summer (and future) seasons must wear some form of protective eyewear. Protective eyewear includes a visor, cage or goggles. As this rule is new for the Summer season, players have up until Week Five (THIS FRIDAY) to have this equipment in place - players who do not have protective eyewear for their Week Five (THIS FRIDAY) game are not eligible to play until they have this equipment in place.

**Only ice hockey or lacrosse gloves are permitted with proper wrist protection during sanctioned CBHA and OBHF games for the protection of all players

- Week 4 saw Haya jump out to an early 3 goal lead courtesy of Omar Essawi, Ibrahim Hindy and Dawood Ciombar to put away Ihsan and give themselves some breathing room at the top of the standings (Score 5-3).   In the other game of the double-header, we were treated to a good old fashion goaltending duel between Ahmad Mobin (Sabr) and Yasir Hussain (Yaqeen) with Saqib Khokhar being the difference giving Sabr a 2-1 victory over Yaqeen.

Week 4 Three Stars:
First Star: Omar Essawi (Haya): 2 Goals + 1 Assist
Second Star: Ammal Esmatyar (Ihsan): 1 Goals + 2 Assists
Third Star: Saqib Khokhar (Sabr): 1 Goal (GWG)

- Haya’s Umer Buksh will not be in the lineup this Friday when his team faces off against Yaqeen. This might be the break Yaqeen needs to get their first win of the season as Buksh’s absence means Haya will have less physical presence on the backend. Also this means Yaqeen’s forwards’ ribs are safe for this week!

- One victim of Buksh’s physical play was Ahmed Khalid of Sabr in Week 3, where the budding teenage star was left lying on the floor winded for several minutes. Give Khalid credit as he picked himself up and came back the following week a scored his first I-slam Hockey career goal of his rookie season against Yasir Hussain (Yaqeen).

- In that same Sabr-Yaqeen game, Saqib Khokhar (Sabr) scored the game winning goal. After the game his team-mates were calling him “Half-Man, Half-Franchise” for getting the go-ahead marker. In particular his mentor, Arif Khan who has really helped developed Khokhar’s game was glad to see his prodigy finally start to factor in on the box-score. Sabr is hoping that Khokhar is able to build from this.

- On a personal front, Khokhar’s Week 4 efforts puts him ahead in points of his cousin Imran Lakhanpal (Haya), however he still trails Khizer Lakhanpal (Haya).

- The extremely hot conditions in the rink has been and will be a factor throughout the season. Make sure to bring enough water (more than usual) and to stay hydrate before and during your game. With this in mind we are allowing teams to have 1 timeout per half (usually it is 1 timeout per game) when the temperature is hot. As well, goaltenders needing a water break please inform the ref during the game.

- The Hit Felt Around The Hockey World: During the Sabr-Yaqeen game, Saqib Khokhar demolished Samad Hamidi of Yaqeen in the first half. Khokhar was correctly called for an interference penalty which Sabr did not mind as they had previously lost two straight games and needed someone to play with a bit of emotion.

- Speaking of penalties, Yaqeen thwarted any notion of tying last week’s game against Sabr by taking a too-many-men penalty in the closing stages of the game. Not sure where this confusion came about as each player on Yaqeen was paired with another player and only subbed in/out with their partner. The mix-up happened with Faisal Mehboob who took full responsibility for the mishap said that the pressure and intensity of the game along with the scorching rink condition brought about the confusion.  Mehboob tried to make a peace offering to his teammates as he offered to take the team out for some Shisha, claiming he had some in his car and would fire it up in the parking lot - word is no one took him up on that offer.

- Put pressure on your teammates to show up as the hotter it gets the more you will need to rely on a full bench. When a team is short-handed the opposing team is like sharks that only sees red in the water. Case and point was last week in the Ihsan-Haya game, where Ihsan was severely short-handed last week.

- One player who has shown up consistently throughout the season is Samad Hamidi, who has played pretty well this season. Taking the ball up and blocking shots when necessary. Even putting his body on the line when a penalty is inevitable, as last week he drew 2 penalties.

- The heat has made the playing conditions miserable and have been cutting tempers short. During the Sabr-Yaqeen game, Sabr’s goaltender Ahmad Mobin and teammate Emad Hussain were spotted in a heated exchange after the whistle. The argument centered around Hussain failing to communicate with Mobin on how he should play the ball. Whatever happened during the exchange the two were able to figure it out and help preserve the one goal victory.

- Last week Omar Essawi, Suleman Bhatti, Ibrahim Hindy, and Dawood Ciombar of Haya had themselves a night with each registering 3 points against Ihsan.

- Omar Essawi has stretched his goal-scoring streak to four games and now leads the league with points (tied with teammate Dawood Ciombar) and goals. GM Dawood Ciombar can hit the critics right back where it hurts them. As #1 pick Omar Essawi has been lights out this season, averaging better than a goal per game. No one can deny now that Dawood made a smart discussion.

- Another impressive streak from Haya is Ibrahim Hindy, who has scored three times in only appearing in the last two games.

- Fahad Panchbaya (Sabr) and Ammar Panchbaya (Sabr), although they haven’t dominated the score sheets like other Panchbayas in the past (ie HUZAIFAH) they have played solid and have done all the little things the team needs. Look for these two young guns to break out, it’s only inevitable.

- Haya has a nice three point cushion (along with a tie-breaker) over second place, Sabr. Again the importance of finishing the top two seeds is massive for this season:

“The regular season has great significance especially for the semi-finals. The semifinals will be a “best of two”, where the 1st and 2nd seed respectively will start their series with a one game lead. That means the 3rd and 4th seed must win (not tie) in Playoff Week 1 to force a sudden death overtime and if still tied after that a shootout to determine who advances to the Championship Series.”

- It appears the above messaging has not been received by Sabr as they will start this week’s game against Ihsan short-handed for failing to produce a recap. Arslan Mian (Sabr) will be serving the penalty. This game is huge and the winner will take over ownership of the second seed. For Sabr if they were to lose this Friday they would lose the season series with Ihsan which can come back and bite them in the butt for any tie-breaker scenarios.

- Sabr defenseman Farhan Saleh, looks to be making a return after a 2 week hiatus. This will bring much needed stability to the d core as Arslan Mian has had to utilize captain Arif Khan and Omar Husain on the back end.

- It was noted last week that the brother’s from Ihsan, Ammal Esmatayar and Ajaml Esmatayar play like the Sedin twins with one having the uncanny ability to find the other and creating a high quality scoring chance. In Week 4 Ammal Esmatayar put up three points and his brother had 2 assists.

- Not to be outdone by Kawhi Leonard’s signing on with the Clippers, some I-Slam GMs tried to grab the news cycle with their own player movements as we have a waiver transaction to report:

Haya was brought in Luqman Arshad to replace Naiem Malik (who has not showed up to a game this season).  Here is a reminder of the waiver rule:

“If a player has dropped out of the league, a team can bring in a new player. That player must first clear waivers where the other 3 remaining teams have the opportunity to put in a claim (with the team with the poorest record having priority). If all teams pass on the new player then he can join the team in which brought him in. However if a team makes a claim they must give up a player from their roster who was drafted in the same round or better as the player who dropped out. The team who originally brought in the new player can either accept this or select a player from the other team’s roster who was drafted lower than the round they are replacing.”

- Yaqeen claimed Luqman and Haya accepted Rizwan Malik as compensation.

- Now Yaqeen has a monster defensive core: Luqman Arshad, Farukh Khan, Mohammed Hamoud and Samad Hamidi. There are some rumblings that one of these players will move up as a forward to add to the offense. Our guess that it will either be Hamoud or Arshad. Regardless, this veteran team just needs its players to show up.  That said with their depth on the back end now it puts Yaqeen in a position to be able to make a trade to acquire some scoring as teams are always on the lookout for defence.

- Rumours of some discontent in the Haya locker room were heard as players were frustrated with the absence of Naiem Malik, the teams 4th round pick who had yet to play this season and seemingly ghosted the team.  Their hope of getting a defensemen through waivers were dashed when Yaqeen claimed Luqman Arshad but Haya gets a solid consolation prize as it were in taking Rizwan Malik. The gritty forward will be a huge asset to their already strong forward core and gives the first place team a boost as the season grinds on.  Haya was reportedly eyeing Rizwan Malik during the draft and managed to get him in the end - just not the way anyone would have expected.

- Luqman Arshad joining Mohammed Hamoud on Yaqeen gives the pair the opportunity to run-it-back, as the two played together last season’s championship winning team- Ikhlas
- Goalies, The Heroes We Need But Not The One’s We Deserve- give credit to Yusuf Kapoor (Haya), Yasir Hussain (Yaqeen), Ahmad Mobin (Sabr) and Imran Alvi (Ihsan) who all played through the heat last week trying to help their respective teams to secure two points. Hussain noted for goalies that it is a huge advantage in being the home team as you finish the game near the open-air side.

Summer Season - Week Four - July 5th

Week 3 saw Ihsan’s Faraaz Alvi putting a dagger through Yaqeen’s hearts with a blast from the point with just over a minute left in the game, preventing Yaqeen from getting their first win of the campaign. As well, Haya’s Ubaid Khan powered his team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Sabr

Three Stars of the Week for June 28th:
1st Star: Mo Hamoud (Yaqeen): 1 Goal + 1 Assist
2nd Star: Mohammed Ubaid Khan (Haya): 2 Assists
3rd Star: Ibrahim Hindy (Haya): 1 Goal (GWG)

- In the Haya vs Sabr game last week, Sabr made a late push to tie the game. In fact many spectators thought they did as Vasim Kagzi (Sabr) scored a goal from the point as time was expiring. However the refs ruled that time did in fact run out before the ball had crossed the goal-line. Tough pill for Sabr to swallow but they could have some silver-lining as it seems that Kagzi is starting to feel more comfortable and letting his slap-shot rip.

- With the victory in Week 3, Haya finds themselves on top of the league standings. A big reason is their GM, Dawood Ciombar is proving doubters wrong with his first round pick, Omar Essawi who is leading the league in goals and has scored in all three games this season.

- Haya’s Ibrahim Hindy made a huge impact in his season debut scoring the game winning goal last week. It was a nice set up by Dawood Ciombar. The two seem to have some nice chemistry going which probably stems from the pickup ice-hockey sessions they play together during the winter.

- In Week 4 Haya and Ihsan will battle for first overall and in the other game Sabr and Yaqeen will look to avoid finishing the week as the league’s worse team.

- Leading by example: First time in I-slam Hockey history where the GMs from each respective team is leading the league in scoring

- Speaking of GMs, in the Ihsan vs Yaqeen game during the closing moments of the first half, the two GMs, Ajmal Esmatyar (Ihsan) and Mohammed Hamoud (Yaqeen) were engaged in a fierce battle along the boards where Esmatyar was trying to get around Hamoud. After the exchange Esmatyar had this to say, “man if Hamoud wanted to, he can be a world champion in kapadi

- Last week Yaqeen teammates Mohammed Hamoud, Faisal Mehboob and Ahmad Ibrahim arrived at the rink wearing the same t-shirts. They decided that although their season has not been going well that showing unity both on and off the court is vital to help turn things around.

- #RanTheEast : The Yaqeen-Sabr matchup tonight has a bit more meaning for Mohammed Hamoud, Ahmad Ibrahim and Ahmad Mobin. The three players reside in the East (Durham Region) and are looking to bring home bragging rights as ‘The King of The East’. Round 1 went to Mobin.

- In case you are wondering your team faces the other three teams a total of three teams this season. So this means we will being the second circuit from Weeks 4-6 where you get to see teams for the second time this season.

- Haya’s Umer Buksh (Mr. Two Goals in One Game) seems to be working hard during the week to develop his defensive game. Early in the season he body-bagged Abdu-Sharkawy (Yaqeen) and just last week Sabr’s Ahmed Khalid experienced some discomfort trying to get around Buksh. Buksh is proving to be quite a force on Haya’s blue-line for oppose forwards to deal with. Buksh had this to say, “I am just trying to take my game to the next level and be a complete player. We all know the scoring touch that I have… but there is more to my game. In fact when I came into this league I really admired the shut-down abilities of Saajid Bhayat and Farrukh Khan. This season I am trying to model my game after them. I am also a student of the game. I have been watching mix-tapes of other legendary defensemen during the week and seeing how I can incorporate their games into my game.”

- Ihsan’s Faraz Alvi has been taking on more of a leadership role as you can see him heavily involved in his team’s huddles trying to inspire and motivate his teammates.

- Imran Alvi, goaltender for Ihsan was away last week because he was getting married. Sources say that he will be in the lineup tonight. It must have been a busy week for Alvi! How will this play a factor for his performance tonight?

- On the topic of weddings…Saqib Khokhar, Emad Hussain and Ahmad Ibrahim all attended Hannan Ghafoor’s wedding over the weekend. Apparently Khokhar started a table fire to try and create a chance for him to be the hero. We caught up with his mentor, Arif Khan for a comment, “when I told Saqib that we needed him to bring all that smoke this is not what I meant! I need him to start believing in himself, in his abilities and his game and start producing on the floor. That kid has so much potential. It is scary! At the end of the season there should be no reason why number 25 in yellow should be hanging in the rafters.”

- During Hannan’s wedding, Ahmad Ibrahim was touted as saving the event from complete disaster as he moved the ice-cream tub from the middle of the dinner table to the very end. This allowed everyone to get their dinner first and then enjoy the desert afterwards. Eternally grateful was Emad Hussain who reportedly binged on both strawberry and vanilla flavours.

- Arslan Mian has been spotted golfing during the past week. Hopefully this is not a sign to come for Sabr.

- Ali Murtaza (Yaqeen) is having a revitalized season as he is tied with the lead in scoring.

- Emad Hussain (Sabr) continues to be creating locker-room turmoil with his personal preference of playing as a forward. To manage the current team dynamics, GM Arslan Mian has had little to no choice to put first overall pick Omar Hussain on defense.  Hussain’s offensive production has suffered as a result. Mian is going to have to figure out a way to manage the competing personalities as his team has scored the lowest amount of goals so far.

- 2018 Fall Scoring champion Yusuf Ingar (Ihsan) is leading the league in assists. Looks like he is trading the goals for assists this season. Expect the young superstar to start taking over games with his offense.

- Last week there were a few player transactions. However it seems with the uncertainty of Kawhi Leonard’s free agency decision is also having an effect for I-slam as no trades/waivers occurred the past week. Regardless, here is the latest we are hearing of players rumoured to be on the trading block:

Samad Hamidi (Yaqeen): teams are looking for a right-handed d-man
Farrukh Khan (Yaqeen): Yaqeen might be looking to swap out defense for offense
Naiem Malik (Haya): attendance issues
Abduljalil Shaikh (Ihsan): attendance issues
Saajid Bhayat (Ihsan): would like to re-join Yaqeen and play with his friends
Emad Hussain (Sabr): the belief is that he does not fit into Sabr’s lineup as a forward
