Spring Season - Week Six - February 22nd

- Week Five saw Emaan and Ikhlas end in a 3-3 tie to open the night, Ihsan and Sabr end in a 1-1 tie, Shukr and Haya end in a 3-3 tie and Ridha defeat Yaqeen 5-2 for the only game that ended in a win to close the night.

Three Stars of the Week for February 8th:
1st Star: Sufyan Kazi (Ridha): 2 Goals, 2 Assists, GWG
2nd Star: Humza Ali (Haya): 1 Goal, 2 Assists
3rd Star: Aazar Zafar (Emaan): 1 Goal, 1 Assist, GTG

- Week Six sees the cross-Divisional games continue as teams try to get an edge on a team they may face in the Finals while watching teams in their division hoping to get a hold on a playoff spot.

- Emaan was hoping that their trade to acquire Arif Khan would spark their team but instead found themselves down 3-0 to Ikhlas at the half.  Yet when they seemed certain to lose another game Khan helped to lead a rally that resulted in three straight goals and walking away with a tie.

- Haya went into their game with Shukr with unfortunate news as GMs Fahad Mohammad and Maaz Haq were involved in a car accident on the way to the game.  Both players were okay but unable to leave the scene.  To allow Haya to have a chance, Shukr agreed to allow Haya to use a goalie from an earlier game and selected Ahmad Mobin who graciously agreed to stay later and avoid an empty net game.  Ironically Mobin had arguably his best game of the season with some big saves as Shukr dominated the game but only managed a tie.

- Another newly acquired player was in action in the next game as Idrees Deen suited up for Sabr and got off to a good start scoring his teams first goal.  Unfortunately the offence dried up from there and Ihsan scored in the second half to end the game in a tie.  Adeel Awan also made his debut for Ihsan in this game and while he didn't end up on the scoresheet against his old team, his defensive presence was key in shutting down Sabr's top line.

- Haya was without GMs Fahad Mohammad and Maaz Haq unexpectedly but they seemed to continue their approach of resting key players as Arssal Shahabuddin was rested for this game.

- The battle of Malton was featured last week as the old guard in Yaqeen took on the new guard in Ridha.  Yaqeen's approach of being physical to set the tone was a failure from the start as Ridha roared out to a 3-0 lead after about 10 minutes of play.  The young legs of Ridha had the step needed to expose the skilled but slower Yaqeen players.  The teams will not have a chance to meet again unless they both make the finals so bragging rights will stay with the Youngbloods for now.

- Sulmaan Azmat's ankle injury appears to have healed as he was spotted at a volleyball tournament during the bye week.

- Shukr had a great game on special teams against Haya, scoring two early powerplay goals and a spectacular shorthanded goal from Osman Buttar who went end to end and picked the corner with his short to give Shukr a 3-2 lead.  Their play in 5-on-5 left something to be desired as Haya was up 3-0 in that category.

- Many observers have questioned Ridha and their ability to win with a thin and inexperienced defence core but at the mid-point of the season they are in 1st place overall and have the lowest goals allowed this season.  They have been pushing Huzaifah Panchbhaya and Sufyan Kazi back and both have excelled by generating offence coming out of their zone.

- Both Sabr and Emaan will be looking for their first win this season as they play each other this week.  If either team has any hopes of the playoffs this game is critical to getting on the right path - although Emaan is in a more dire position of the two.

- Several I-Slam Hockey members took part in an annual Muslim Ice Hockey tournament (Crescent Classic) during the Family Day long weekend.  Ahmad Mobin and Dawood Ciombar had solid tournaments.  Zayd Agjee back-stopped his team to a runner up spot in the Competitive Division while Sufyan Shaikh rallied his team from being down 4-1 to a 5-4 win in the finals.

- While the Sabr vs Emaan game is expected to have all the big names, it may be missing some of the charisma as Emad Hussain of Sabr is away for "work" as he was spotted at a resort in the Seychelles.

- There continue to be rumours of more trades in play and as expected Sabr seems to be in the middle of it.  Full credit to their leadership for being willing to try anything to get the team to perform to how they expected as pundits picked them to dominate the league after the draft.  Samad Hamidi continues to pop up as the player they may move as he is valued as a steadying defensive presence and his great knowledge of players in the league and their tactics.

- The Ihsan vs Haya game next week will feature Khizer Lakhanpal playing against cousin Imran Lakhanpal with a friendly (or not so friendly) challenge between the two where the first to score a goal will have his family treated to an outing by the other.  Imran Lakhanpal will be playing another family member the week after as Ihsan faces Ridha who feature Saqib Khokar.  Khokar will surely be watching how this one plays out before making a challenge of his own.

- Both Shukr and Ihsan missed submitting their recap on time and will see their opponent start the game with a power-play.

Spring Season - Week Five - February 8th

- Week Four saw Shukr defeat Sabr 3-2, Yaqeen dominate but let Haya steal a 4-4 tie, Ikhlas rout Ihsan 5-1 in a chippy affair and Ridha defeat Emaan 3-0.

Three Stars of the Week for January 25th:
1st Star: Emmad Khawaja (Yaqeen): 2 Goals, 1 Assist
2nd Star: Maaz Haq (Haya): 2 Goals, 2 Assists

- Ikhlas tried to mix things up last week as they moved Rameez Siddiqi to play defence and his physical presence helped shake things up as the team pulled out a big win over Ihsan.

- Sabr responded to their loss against Shukr last week by making a trade, they moved Adeel Awan to Emaan in exchange for Idrees Deen.  A surprising move since Awan is one of the leaders for Sabr and close friend to GM Waqar Khan but winless after four games means no one is safe - nor should they be really speaking.

- Sabr made the move for Idrees Deen in hope that he will ignite their secondary scoring otherwise GMs Gehad AlhundiWaqar Khan and Yousuf Sowdagar will have to continue to shoulder the offensive burden for the team.

- An observer noted that it was the two winless teams trying to solve each other’s issue by making the above trade.

- Haya got a big game from young star Maaz Haq who put up a two goals and two assists in a tie against Yaqeen, Haq scoring the equalizer with just over three minutes left in the game.  Haya has taken an unusual approach this season as they have been practising the fad of "Load Management" for their key players.  Haq was rested for the first two games and in Week Four they sat Farrukh Khan and Ibrahim Butt.  It will be interesting to see if the team continues with this approach to try and keep players fresh.

- With their first win of the season, Ikhlas jumped over Sabr to grab third place in the Mecca Division, Sabr will surely rue their first three games of the season which all ended in ties as a win in any of them would have them in the playoff picture right now.

- During the Yaqeen vs Haya game, Nadeem Hussain and Asim Gauhar of Yaqeen were overheard playfully trash-talking with Salman Mohiuddin of Haya when their team was up 3-0 and seemingly on their way to a blow-out win.  Humble pie was served as the game ended in a 4-4 tie with Mohiuddin having a bit of a laugh at his friends expense for celebrating their teams win a bit too early.

- A day after being dealt to Emaan, Awan was on the move again as he was traded to Ihsan in exchange for Arif Khan.  A whirlwind 24 hours for Awan who may have been looking to borrow the go-bag that Abdu Sharkawy used a couple of seasons ago where he was traded a pair of times right before the season started.  Emaan gets a crafty veteran forward in Khan who they will hope can boost their league worst offence while Ihsan picks up Awan who can line up as a forward or defensemen and help cover gaps when their bench is short.

- One wonders if Waqar Khan is feeling the heat from his Cambridge crew after trading friend Adeel Awan.  We will not have to wait long to find out as in a poetic twist, Awan will face his old team this week as Ihsan faces a struggling Sabr.

- Emaan has struggled this season, no wins in four games proves that, and while their GMs did make a deal hoping to spark the team they are also hoping for some good news on the injury front.  Early in the second half against Ridha, Sulmaan Azmat rolled his ankle and was forced to sit the rest of the game.  His versatility in being able to play multiple positions has helped Emaan try to balance their lines for each game and his positive locker room presence cannot be understated so they'll be hoping he's available for tonights game as they try to get their season on track.

- Ridha will start their Week Five game against Yaqeen shorthanded as they (again) did not send their recap in on time.

- With multiple players missing, Ridha was forced to put both Huzaifah Panchbhaya and Sufyan Kazi back on defence, the result was a surprise as the team got a shutout - although that was more due to the stellar play of their goalie Ali Khwaja and Emaan's poor offensive showing.  Ridha needs to find some depth on D and were reportedly scouting Samad Hamidi of Sabr who they feel can give them some experience on the blue-line and may be available considering how open their team is to making a deal.

- Sabr has been burning up the trade-lines with moves all season as they have made three deals so far this season and their second in two weeks.  Rumours are if they don't get their first win in Week Five they may either trade everyone or demand a redraft for the league.

- The league hasn't approached the "Crazy Season" which is the week of the trade deadline but deals are obviously heating up so while we expect some more to happen, league rules prevent something like this with a player being traded mid-game - something we assume the Sabr GMs have looked into already.

Spring Season - Week Four - February 1st

- Week Three saw Emaan against Shukr end in a 2-2 tie, Sabr and Ridha followed with a 3-3 tie, Haya scored late to defeat Ikhlas 3-1 and Ihsan got a 4-1 win over Yaqeen.

Three Stars of the Week for January 25th:

2nd Star: Maaz Haq (Haya): 1 Goal, GWG
3rd Star: Huzaifah Panchbhaya (Ridha): 2 Goals

- Week Four sees the schedule move from Divisional Games to cross-Divisional, so some interesting games are up as teams get a break from divisional rivalries.

Here are the Divisional Standings after Week Three:

- Early in the week, Sabr and Ridha made the first post-draft trade of the season with Fahad Panchbhaya going to Ridha in exchange for Abdur-Rahman Buttar.  For Ridha the deal gives them another scoring forward but weakens their already thin defence.  For Sabr they add another defensemen when scoring has actually been their challenge.

- Some pundits wondered why Sabr (or even Ridha for that matter) would make this trade, for Ridha their big need was on D but knowing that they traded for their friend explains things a bit.  For Sabr it seems strange because they are already playing a few defensemen out of position as forwards.  With that said outside of their top line no one has a point this season except for Ahmad Ibrahim so something needs to change quickly, if anything is certain for Sabr it is that their GMs are not afraid to shake things up if it isn't working.

- Ihsan was missing some key players going into their game against Yaqeen in a battle for 1st place in the Medina division but Imran Lakhanpal stepped up and notched two goals and was a big offensive threat all game to give Ihsan the boost they needed to get the win.

- The trade between Ridha and Sabr has started conversations among other GMs about moving pieces. We may start to see other trades to follow as GMs look to fine tune teams

- Emaan has been plagued by a rough start to this season, they attribute this to the curse of the Orange jersey, something that Ikhlas can probably empathize with seeing as how anyone playing in Green has struggled

- After watching the Ridha vs Sabr game last week and then seeing the trade between the teams, an observer joked that Ridha probably liked Fahad Panchbhaya's playmaking ability as he feathered a beauty of a pass which set up Ridha's third goal - too bad he was still playing for Sabr at the time.  No word if that error led to his quick trade from Sabr

- Emaan may be in the market to make a deal as Naeem Akhtar and Huzaifa Manjra are not able to find the right chemistry for this squad and if they go winless in Week Four then look for a deal

- Sabr struggling with three ties in three games (so winless this season) so one deal made to shake things up, more perhaps on the horizon

- Ridha may be without Tariq Baksh tonight as his usual ride is his cousin Ahmad Mobin who plays goal for Emaan has said he won't ride-share since they face each other tonight.

- Shukr played it cautious with Sufyan Shaikh last week who felt he was ready to make his season debut but they wanted to give him another week to recover.

- Emaan took a similar approach with Abdul-Wahab Mohammad who played limited minutes last week as he eases himself back into the rotation coming off an injury
